They join an illustrious group of 16 artists, the first of which were appointed 2005: these founding group have played an important role in transforming Sadler’s Wells into the world-leading dance organisation it is today.

Associate Artists are at the heart of Sadler’s Wells’ artistic vision. Sadler’s Wells commissions new work from its Associate Artists, helps them develop their ideas, and provides them with resources and technical expertise. The first group of Associates Artists was appointed by Sir Alistair Spalding in 2005. This played an important role in transforming Sadler’s Wells into an organisation that makes new work, as well as presenting it, and helped it become the world-leading dance institution it is today.

A Statement from Uprise Rebel:

This announcement is important on many levels, but also has a personal resonance for us. Some time ago, while Grace was working behind a desk and starting to dream of founding her own company, she was struck by the lack of diversity of both gender and race in the well respected Associate Artists programme at Sadler's Wells. It was thoughts such as these that propelled her to start Uprise Rebel to challenge these structures and hierarchical archetypes that were in place, and to set a new paradigm for the representative faces of the contemporary dance sector. Fast forward to today and here we are with a new cohort of non-white and non-male choreographers being supported to create high-profile work and enrich one of the UK's most important performing arts institutions, two of which are an important part of the Uprise Rebel family.
